Week 2 Conference - Sustainability and Exponential Growth

In my opinion, sustainability in regard to the environment is closely tied to conservationism.  The goal of each is to maintain for an unspecified amount of time, our environment.  In order for humans to "sustain" themselves on Earth, we will need to find new ways to prevent the wasteful use of it's resources.  This also makes sustainability key to preserving and continuing life on Earth.

Exponential growth deals with growth of an item by raising it to a specified power or exponent.  For instance, during conception, a zygote will divide exponentially within the womb.  The exponential growth of each successive cell division will grow from 1 to 2 cells, from 2 to 4 cells, from 4 to 8 cells, etc.  Another method of exponentiation is described by a method used in the financial industry.  It is used to determine the doubling time of money, and is called the "Rule of 72."  It states that 72 divided by a percent, X, will return a value for the number of years it will take to double your money.  For instance in if I invest $1000 at 12% I will double my money in 6 years (72/12%=6 years).  Consequently, this value includes reinvested dividends.
