Week 2, Chapter 1 Continued

As I've stated before in my previous message replies, the major inventions in recent history have played major roles in how business is conducted. From print, television, radio, and now the Internet, the way business is conducted has been enhanced by each of these technologies.

Since the Internet age has emerged within the past 10 years, businesses have, out of necessity, had to adapt to the new technology. The replies to this conference have displayed that the organizations affected are many and diverse. With my associates I agree that the military and the financial industries have emerged to use the Internet and it's ensuing technologies to enhance it's operations.

Some aspects that the military has utilized the Internet and it's sister technologies (broadband, wireless communications, etc.) is to enhance information flow. With the implementation of new logistics systems and programs, we can move thousands of tons of materials with little to no notice. We have placed Internet capable computers on US Navy ships and we have designed increasingly greater aircraft than our competitors.

Let me briefly touch on the return on these enhancements to military readiness. Enhanced communications in the logistics field allow for more rapid deployment to potential hotspots and disaster. By decreasing response time, we can save lives and help promote the national interests of the US. The military has given back to it's people by way of having the Internet onboard ships at sea. While enhancing troop morale, they have also provided for the c to increase recruiting and retention. Although having Internet while at sea cannot be the only contributing factor to people exiting the Navy, I feel that it can be a contributing factor as to why to stay in. The advent of computers and CAD/CAM has created a whole new method of designing aircraft. Designers can "manufacture" a working model of aircraft, then fly them without ever leaving the office. The Internet has allowed for faster turnaround time within and between the military and civilian communities during the research and development of aircraft. We have become a sibilant partner with the organizations that support us.

These examples have drastically changed the way the military operates and conducts it business. We have increased our service, while at the same time used fewer resources of time, people, and money. These three examples by no means are an exhaustive list of the enhancements that the military has created with the use of the Internet. They none the less demonstrate the wide range of applications that the Internet produces. The Internet will continue to play a major role in the civilian community as well. From e-Bay to you supermarket. The Internet has changed the way we live our lives and how businesses compete for your all-mighty dollar.
