Week 6, Chapter 6

In my line of work as a Security Forces member I don't have much interaction with IS.  Some observations that I've made with my dealings in building computers and reading various computer magazines is that a person's pay could substantially be enhanced by completing just a few MCSE courses and getting certified.  In today's ever changing computer world, by the time a graduate who entered college 4 years ago graduated, many new technologies have emerged.  Since I've been in Europe over the past 4 years, I've seen the greater emergence of XML, ASP, and CSS.  Java has really taken off, and PERL is progressing well.  Just a few years ago, some of these languages were barely a thought in some brainchild's head.

As for the question of businesses leasing or buying computers and the death of client/server applications.  I don't think the web will kill client/server applications in the near future.  One main reason for this is the security issue.  Major security risks abound with web-side applications.  The converse is true with WANs/LANs.  Security issues within an internal network are significantly lower than if the network was wired to the Internet.  The primary security issue with internal networks is from internal sources.

I consider myself fairly technically adept at personal computer hardware, but no technical knowledge of network hardware.  I know what a switch looks like and well as routers.  But to explain what they do I couldn't even begin.  I've never had the opportunity to explain the hardware aspect of personal computers to anyone.  My core knowledge of computer systems is more software related.
